Welcome to St Patrick-on-the-hill
Situated high in the Amathole mountains, one finds the St Patrick-on-the-hill chapel. It offers a serene place of worship and is well worth visiting.
Its welcoming doors invite all, regardless of faith or background, to experience a moment of tranquillity and spiritual connection. The chapel is never closed!
The chapel has an active, lively congregation that plays a valuable role in the community; the wider community fully identifies with it; it is a very popular wedding venue. The chapel is visited throughout the day as a wayside prayer venue and is a top tourist destination in Hogsback.
Visitors remarked: “What a beautiful little church; what a sobering experience to enter the quiet, peaceful chapel, but it is the prayer trail that touches your heart; the views are stunning and add to the spiritual experience. The beautiful chapel is always open”.
A church for the community
Given the village’s history, it is no wonder that community building is integral to its activities. The chapel is strongly associated with the greater Hogsback community.
It fosters a sense of unity among the community and visitors alike.
The congregation supports the Hobbiton Association Outdoor Education Centre and the Jikani Community Centre.
In the words of Trevor Webster, long-time resident and historian:
“The chapel has continued to grow as a place of worship and has played a caring role in the greater Hogsback community, and has continued to be a jewel marvelled at by travellers from far and near.”
